Democrats Building Unity with Republicans

Building unity. Many Republican legislators in the United States House and Senate have said that they don’t think President Biden has done a good job of building unity with them. Well, they said the same thing about President Barack Obama. And the simple truth is that Republicans don’t want to unite with Democrats.

This is not hard to understand. The only ideas that Republican legislators would support are reducing taxes on the wealthiest individuals and on companies, and raising taxes on many members of the middle class; and reducing taxes on the wealthiest individuals and on companies, and raising taxes on many members of the middle class; and reducing taxes on the wealthiest individuals and on companies, and raising taxes on many members of the middle class.

This is true because the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which the Republican legislators all loved very much, succeeded in doing two things: reducing taxes on the wealthiest individuals and on companies, and shifting most of that tax burden to individual members of the middle class, thereby raising taxes on many individual members of the middle class. It did not cause a jump in employment, or a burst of sustained GDP growth, or have any other measurable economic impact — other than to raise the national debt by $2 trillion.

So, the 2017 Trump tax cut reduced taxes for the wealthiest individuals and on corporations and companies, and had no impact that could be measured beyond the first two quarters after it took effect.

As for building unity, it takes action by two political parties to unite, and if one party is unwilling to compromise on anything, and meet the other party anywhere close to the middle, then there is no hope of any kind of unity, cooperation or compromise. One cannot dance with someone who refuses to dance. Many Democratic legislators have proven, time and time again, that they are willing to move to the center, to move toward the position the Republicans typically take.

But, many Republican legislators have demonstrated a complete unwillingness to compromise or move from their position of “we should enact tax cuts,” and “we should not spend any government money (collected taxes) on anything other than (maybe some) roads and bridges, and Senators’ and Representatives’ salaries.”

Derek Chauvin Verdict in George Floyd Case

I am sitting here this afternoon, waiting for the Derek Chauvin verdict in the George Floyd case. I have prepared myself for “not guilty” on all counts, because that is how all (?) the similar cases have gone, when members of law enforcement have killed people of color for reasons that are or appear ludicrous.

Many of us will find it difficult to believe that Chauvin is not guilty of the death of George Floyd. We saw Chauvin hold Floyd down with his body and knee on Floyd’s body for nearly 10 minutes — more than three minutes after Floyd’s body stopped moving. If someone has died, how can one explain staying on the dead body for more than three minutes after the victim stops all movement and appears to stop breathing.

The verdict came back quickly. It came back faster than I prepared for. Truly, I thought that the jury would need to deliberate for days. I served on a jury, and I know what that experience is like, as have the many millions of us who serve on juries in serious criminal cases. It would have been so fascinating to be able to observe and listen to the jurors while they deliberated in this case.

I won’t be surprised if the jury finds Chauvin not guilty on all counts.

So Many Shootings

There have been so many shootings lately — the most recent happened this morning in Indianapolis. Eight people died at a FedEx facility after someone opened fire late Thursday, April 15. Sometimes it’s a single person who dies, other times it’s more than that. I have been struggling with how to deal with all the shootings. I Listened To Trump

I listened to Trump accept the Republican Party’s nomination and, during that speech in 2016,  describe “American carnage.” During that nomination acceptance speech, I listened to him say, “I alone can fix it.” (He was very wrong.) I listened to Trump accept the Republican Party’s nomination and, during that speech in 2016,  describe “American carnage.” During that nomination acceptance speech, I listened to him say, “I alone can fix it.” (He was very wrong.)

I listened to Trump say, about downplaying the Covid-19 pandemic, “I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.” I listened in March and April and May when he said the virus will “go away.” Trump’s lack of action and abundant, repeated lies have made the pandemic impact much worse.

I listened to him say, for months in 2020, that if people were allowed to vote by mail, “the election will be stolen.”

And then I listened to him say, for weeks, “the election was stolen.”

In December, I listened to Trump encourage his supporters on Twitter to show up for a “big protest” in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, the day that Congress accepted the Electoral College votes.

I listened to him at a Georgia rally Jan. 4, when he told supporters, “If the liberal Democrats take the Senate and the White House — and they’re not taking this White House — we’re going to fight like hell, I’ll tell you right now. We’re going to take it back.”

In his speech before the riot on Jan. 6, I listened to Trump praise his supporters for showing up to “save our democracy.” I listened to him tell supporters, “we’re going to walk down to the Capitol … You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

And after weeks of being fed lies, his supporters interpreted and acted on his commands by breaking past police barricades and committing felonies by the dozen, while invading, damaging and desecrating the interior and exterior of the US Capitol.

I listened to Trump. For many years.

More than enough.

Trump And The GOP Love “Freedom” (?)

As we have seen, Trump did much better in the November 2020 election than he was expected to do. More people voted for him than many polls indicated would be the case. When asked why they like Trump, many Trump supporters have said that they don’t like the way that Democrats want to take away their freedom, and that Trump… Read more The post Trump And The GOP Love “Freedom” (?) appeared first on Broken...

As we have seen, Trump did much better in the November 2020 election than he was expected to do. More people voted for him than many polls indicated would be the case. When asked why they like Trump, many Trump supporters have said that they don’t like the way that Democrats want to take away their freedom, and that Trump and the GOP grant them “freedom.” They often claim that Trump and the GOP love “freedom” and that Democrats do not.

This assertion puzzles me. Here are some examples illustrating why:

Currently, gay people have the freedom to marry in the United States. Citizens gained that freedom nationally during the Obama administration. President Obama is a Democrat.

Marriage

However, if Trump and the GOP love “freedom,” as its members claimed during the run-up to the November 2020 election, then its members would not be trying to take away freedom to marry from others.

Many politicians and opinion and community leaders in the GOP want to take that freedom to legally marry from gay people.  They want to do so by reversing/overturning the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision.

If you do not like gay marriage, and you do not want to infringe on the freedom of others, you can simply say “thank you, but no thank you,” if someone of the same sex proposes to you.

Pregnancy

Here is another example: Currently, women have the right to safe and legal abortion in the United States.

Many politicians, as well as opinion and community leaders, in the GOP want to take the freedom to obtain safe and legal abortion from women. They want to do so by reversing/overturning the Supreme Court’s Roe decision. Trump explicitly said he would nominate to SCOTUS judges who would seek to overturn Roe.

However, if Trump and the GOP love “freedom,” as its members claim, then its members would not be trying to take away freedom to obtain safe and legal abortion from others.

If you are pregnant and you do not want an abortion, and you do not want to infringe on the freedoms of others, you can simply say “Thank you, but no thank you,” if someone asks whether or not you would like an abortion.

Arms

Many Trump supporters have also insisted that the Democrats want to take away their freedom to own guns, and this is why they voted for Trump.

They said that Democrats were going to try to take away their right to own guns — over and over again — during the eight years that Democrat Barack Obama was president. No one tried to take their guns away during the Obama administration. No Democrats have tried to take their guns away during the 4 years of the Trump administration.

Thinking that Democrats are suddenly going to move to revoke the Second Amendment when they have not during the last 12 years is a truly perverse and unrealistic form of paranoia.

Clearly, the Democrats are not the ones hell-bent on eliminating freedoms.

Coney Barrett Omitted Data From SCOTUS Paperwork

SCOTUS Candidate Amy Coney Barrett has committed lies of omission in her application to be an Associate Justice on the US Supreme Court, which she provided to the US Senate.

According to reporting by CNN, “public calendars from the University of Notre Dame’s law school show at least seven additional talks not listed on Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Senate paperwork, including one with the law school’s anti-abortion group, according to a CNN KFile review.”

Specifically, “calendars list her as participating in a panel on religion in the public square, a speech to a student religious society, a talk with the law school’s anti-abortion group, a roundtable on the Constitution, a faculty colloquium, a student scholarship symposium and an event sponsored by Notre Dame’s Women’s Legal Forum.“

The Senate determines whether she gets the lifetime job. Despite these lies and others she told during her confirmation hearing, the GOP-majority Senate will vote to give Coney Barrett the job because she she will rule to overturn the Affordable Care Act and the Roe v. Wade decision granting women access to abortion.

Coney Barrett committed lies of omission. Jared Kushner committed lies like this in his application for a White House job. Kushner omitted many meetings with various Russians from his security clearance application. He got the Security Clearance because his father-in-law is Trump. Trump overrode the objections of those who evaluate a security clearance candidate’s blackmail liability, among other liabilities.

The Trump swamp is full.
